What is BasePaint?
BasePaint is a unique, shared pixel canvas where community members collaboratively create a new piece of art every day. At the end of each day, the canvas locks and is minted as an open edition NFT, available for minting for 24 hours. The revenue generated from these sales is distributed among the contributing artists, with 90% going to the artists based on their contributions and 10% allocated to the protocol.
Day #185 Inside the Human Body
How to Participate
To join the BasePaint community and start painting, you need to purchase a “brush cartridge.” Each standard brush cartridge provides 100 pixels, which reset with each new canvas. You can mint brush cartridges here. If you are interested in collecting the open editions, there is a community created buy bot, which allows you to effectively subscribe to each of the daily mints and then automatically receive them into your wallet for a prepaid period of time of up to one year.
Day #187 Manga
Daily Themes and Color Palettes
Every day, the community votes on the theme for the next day’s artwork, this could be a reaction to a topical news story or public event or a more abstract creative concept. Looking through the minted works, there are lots of references to popular crypto memes and icons. The BasePaint team selects a color palette, specifying which colors can be used on the canvas. This collaborative decision-making process ensures a fresh and engaging experience daily as well as making each work appear coherent. Artists are encouraged to work collaboratively, and there is a built in message board on the page to make collaboration easier.
Day #22 X Copy
Earning Rewards
In addition to earning a share of the mint sales, participants can earn rewards and feature on the BsePaint leaderboards. These rewards can be exchanged for limited edition physical prints, stickers, and other exclusive items from the Perkshop. Despite the canvas being open for 24 hours, even if your pixels are painted over, they still count as active contributions, making you eligible for the profit share. Additionally, you can mint your personal contributions as separate NFTs, which become part of the “BasePaint Work in Progress” collection.
Day #323 Dollar Store Mint
Community Guidelines and Moderation
The BasePaint community enforces guidelines to prevent copyright infringement, NSFW content, and vandalism. Users can flag brushes that violate these rules, and flagged brushes are frozen, preventing further contributions. This self-regulation ensures a positive and respectful environment for all artists.
Current Status and Achievements
The project has been running for almost a year and is currently minting Canvas #341, which depicts the UEFA Euro 2024 Final and features contributions from over 300 individual artists. According to data from Flipside Crypto, over 175,000 canvases have been minted by more than 20,000 unique collectors, with over 3,000 artists contributing to the project to date.
Conclusion
BasePaint is a unique and interesting platform with a thriving community that combines art and technology in an innovative way. The pixel art that is created is of a high quality and made even more impressive when understood in the context of the underlying tech which makes this collaborative approach possible. Whether you’re an artist looking to make your mark or an art lover interested in collecting unique digital pieces, Base Paint offers a unique and rewarding experience.
